Frequently Asked Questions:

Do adults and children need a ticket?

  • Yes, everyone over the age of 23 months requires a ticket.

Should we wear a costume?

  • Absolutely! We encourage all our guests (children and adults) to get into the spirit of the event by dressing up. Event staff and volunteers will be in costume, so why not you? Please remember however, security does not condone any “monkey” business and if your character is disruptive or gory you may be spoken with. Please note all our performers wear performer badges so that we know who is part of the show.

Is the Safeway Boo event scary?

  • There is a scarier section for teens and adults, however when bringing children to the event it totally depends on the child.  We do recommend that younger children come earlier in the evening while it is still dusk, this is also the best time for the kiddie rides.
  • We specifically have designed Toddler Tuesdays to give those children and parents an opportunity to visit the event in a more fairytale setting.

Are the rides an additional cost?

  • No. The rides are not an additional cost, they are included in the ticket price.
  • The rides are geared towards children and not adults and they usually include a carousel, pony rides, a haunted house, car, boats, and motorcycle rides.  Rides vary depending on weather and availability.
  • Rides operate until 15 minutes prior to gate close or 8:45 p.m.
  • There is no limit to the number of times you can go on a ride, it is dependent on line-ups.

What is the best time to arrive?

  • We recommend that you arrive when the gates open if you are bringing young children so that they can experience all the rides without all the line-ups.  Gates open at 5:30 on weekends and 6:00 on week days.  We are closed on Mondays.
  • The parking lots tend to fill up quickly as well, so please be prepared for a walk if you arrive later in the evening.

Is the zoo/event handicap accessible?

  • Yes, all areas are accessible during normal weather conditions.

Will the restaurant and gift shop be open?

  • Yes, the restaurant is open until 8:30 p.m. during the event.
  • The gift shop is open from gate opening 5:30 on weekends and 6:00 on week days.  The gift shop closes at 9:00 p.m. each night.  Please note – there is no admittance to the event through the gift shop.  All must leave through the front doors.

Are you open if it rains?

  • Yes, we operate in all types of weather.  Please dress appropriately.
  • Tickets are per night in order to safely accommodate the guests who attend.

What happens if you close for a night and we have tickets?

  • If in the very unlikely instance that we close for an evening we will honor tickets for another night.  Please note that there are a finite number of tickets printed each night and we cannot accommodate more people on site than is safe to do so.

Can I volunteer?

  • Yes, volunteers over the age of 16 are encouraged to contact us. By calling 927-6029, emailing tzacharias@assiniboinepark.ca , visiting our Zoo Gift Shop or downloading the form HERE.

Can I bring my pet(s) to the zoo?

  • No, pets are not allowed in the zoo.

Can I hit the actors, take props, or bring alcohol?

  • No
  • Security will escort out any disruptive participant.  This is the largest fundraising event of the year for the Zoo Society and we certainly appreciate the support of Winnipeggers, Manitobans and guests.

What are the hours of operation?

  • Mondays – closed
  • Tuesdays – gates open at 6:00 p.m., gates close at 8:30 p.m and event shuts down at 9:00 p.m.
  • Wednesdays – gates open at 6:00 p.m., gates close at 8:30 p.m. and event shuts down at 9:00 p.m.
  • Thursdays – gates open at 6:00 p.m., gates close at 8:30 p.m. and event shuts down at 9:00 p.m.
  • Fridays – gates open at 5:30 p.m., gates close at 8:30 p.m. and event shuts down at 9:00 p.m.
  • Saturdays – gates open at 5:30 p.m., gates close at 8:30 p.m. and event shuts down at 9:00 p.m.
  • Sundays – gates open at 5:30 p.m., gates close at 8:30 p.m. and event shuts down at 9:00 p.m.

Why do you not stay open longer?

  • The animals need their sleep and our volunteers need to go home.
  • The event would not be possible without the assistance of our volunteer performers, many of which are high school and university students.  We respect that once the site is cleared and the performers get back to street clothes that many are not getting home until late.

Are there discounts for groups?

            a. There are discounts for specific nights for groups of 30 or more.

            b. Groups discount forms can be obtained from the website, at the Zoo Gift Shop or by calling 927-6029.

Where can we purchase tickets?

  • All Safeway stores have tickets and you save 25% off the gate ticket price.
  • We suggest that you pre-purchase your ticket to avoid disappointment.

Can I purchase tickets at the Zoo gate?

  • Yes, you can purchase tickets at the zoo gate depending on the number of pre-sold tickets.
  • There are a finite number of guests that we can accommodate each night and if the pre-sold tickets sell out, then the gates will be closed to walk up traffic.
  • If there are tickets available they will be sold to those first in line at the gate.
  • We reserve the right to turn away gate traffic.  Please do not be disappointed pre-purchase your tickets.

How long does it take to walk the event?

  • We usually recommend a minimum of 1 hour. On really busy nights it will take much longer, especially if you want to take in the rides.
  • Guests are welcome to stay as long as the gates are open.

Where do I get more information about the event?
